How Are 2007's Top Five Dow Stocks Performing This Year? [view article]
As I monthly seek to find assets that have value, I have lost money on almost every purchase made this year. Although the multiples are small, the dividends are pretty healthy, the stocks continue to seek a new evaluation, even lower. Unfortunately, we probably will have this for four more years...(remember "four more years!") ReplyThings Aren't Good - Fast Money Recap (9/4/08) [view article]

AIG employees used to claim that the letters, "AIG" stood for "Ain't It Great?" Looks like the Awful Insurance Giant is headed for the Already Interred Graveyard. ReplyYear to Date Performance of Dow 30 Members [view article]
Long term investments in JNJ and XOM among others are especially rewarding when the dividend is considered. Currently my JNJ is yielding 8% and XOM is 6.5%. They are both in dividend reinvesting plans so my holdings are growing at that rate. What's not to like? ReplyYear to Date Performance of Dow 30 Members [view article]

I am buying the bottom 4....for long term investments. Plus nice dividends to compound. ReplyYear to Date Performance of Dow 30 Members [view article]
At the risk of stating the obvious what this interesting line up shows is that timing (and maybe more than a little bit of luck) is everything in this market. The reality is any one of these can have made or lost one money depending on entry point. It seems like trading on fundamentals is a far second to timing, psychology and luck. In this market I have bought positions that seem fundamentally sound and even with charts that look good that shift in days and have had to just dump them to cut losses, except for BA, ha, ha - see above. What is really bad cutting those losses on great stocks was still the right choice months later. I can only figure that eventually great values like XOM will come back into favor. In this market I am still buying but only very selectively and smaller amounts than usual. If something pops I will tend to sell and take a profit and hold nothing long term except several conservative dividend payors and for better or worse some Vanguard mutual funds for my IRA but that is another story... Great resource David! It's great to see that dividends are cushioning the losses for investors this year. To everyone else who believes that this is a short term phenomenon, please check this link out:

Exxon-Mobil (XOM): Can someone explain to me exactly how the most profitable company in the world with decent revenue and earnings growth can be DOWN 16% year to date? Here is the past performance results of XOM,2008 YTD: -16%
2007: +24.3%
2006: + 39.1%
2005: +11.8%
2004: +28.0%
2003: +20.6%
I would assume that their dividend is the safest that you can find in this economy. So what am I missing here? Is XOM a great value play at these levels or what? Reply

Any votes for the stocks which have lost over 15% but don't deserve the punishment? I vote American Express and Pfizer. Pfizer's pipeline may look dry, but they have the financial clout to partner anyone with a hot drug, or to buy them outright. American Express' problems are overstated, I think. I always get a kick in the pants from people who say that index XYZ performed BETTER than the market, when in reality, they just lost LESS! ReplyRedbox: New Video Rental Competition for Blockbuster and Netflix [view article]
Regarding my comment on the servicing cost per DVD at kiosk locations. Both Netflix and Blockbuster already have the massive infrastructure needed to reduce the associated handeling costs and make the kiosk profitable. A start up like Red Box does not. ReplyRedbox: New Video Rental Competition for Blockbuster and Netflix [view article]
Blockbuster is rolling out its own kiosks. 500 over the next few months. They will also have the capabilities for direct downloads into hand held devices. Also Blockbuster charges 4.50 for a two day rental. However there is a seven day grace period before a 1.25 restocking fee. That works out to .50 cents a day vs. Red box 1.00. With most DVD's out for 5-6 days Blockbuster has the advantage.
Additionally blckbusters on line service blows away both Redbox and netflix by allowing for online returns to any blockbuster store and in store exchange rentals. The optimal plan runs around 34.00 per month with unlimited online and instore exchanges.
Red box is limited to the amount of dvd it can hold in each location. Also has anyone brokendown the associated cost for attending to each facility. Picking up , delivering. servicing restocking, distribution and warehousing.
The limited amount of DVDs offered does not support a full blown operation when you calculate cost per rental.
This business is at best an way for McDonalds and Wal Mart to increase their net revenues by offering the service to their customers. Much like a gumball machine.
As a stand alone company its doomed to failure. Reply
